Single-Attosecond-Pulse X-Ray Source from High-Harmonic Generation

A new scheme of ion-based, phase-matched high-harmonic generation is proposed. It is inherently a single-attosecond-pulse x-ray source. The time-dependent phase-matching condition gates the output to be a single-attosecond pulse with a duration as short as 50 attoseconds. The scheme can be operated from water-window soft x-ray to 1.5-keV hard x-ray.
